Before building homes, Shaun Draughn built a career that most said wasn’t possible. An undrafted rookie out of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Shaun played seven years in the NFL across nine teams — not because the path was easy, but because he refused to let adversity define his ceiling. He credits that perseverance, and everything he has accomplished, to his faith in God.
Playing for nine different franchises taught Shaun something most people never learn: how to walk into any room, earn trust quickly, build relationships from scratch, and perform at a high level with people you’ve never worked with before. Every new team meant new coaches, new systems, new cities, and new teammates — and the ability to adapt, lead, and operate efficiently in that environment is exactly what allows Draughn Building Company to run the way it does today. Managing a custom home build requires the same skills: assembling the right people, building trust, delegating with confidence, and keeping every moving part aligned toward one goal.
What most people don’t know is that Shaun’s love for construction began while he was still on the field. During his NFL career, he started investing in flips and renovations — and something unexpected happened. The process of taking a property from conception to completion pulled him in deeply. Seeing a vision become something real, something people could live in and call home, ignited a passion that had nothing to do with football and everything to do with building. By the time he retired from the league in 2018, the path was already clear.
Shaun didn’t walk off the field and call himself a builder. He went to work. He spent years training under seasoned mentors in the Triangle’s construction industry — learning the trade from the inside out, managing up to twelve single-family homes simultaneously, overseeing townhome developments, and mastering every phase of the build process from the ground up. That apprenticeship gave him something no classroom could: real-world experience at scale, earned under people who had spent decades perfecting their craft.
Today, Shaun Draughn brings the discipline of a professional athlete, the wisdom of mentors who poured into him, and the faith that has guided his life — to every custom home Draughn Building Company builds. He set out to become one of the best builders in the Triangle the same way he made every NFL roster: through preparation, hard work, and an unwillingness to accept anything less than his best. That standard lives in every home we deliver.
Shaun Draughn is a proud husband and father first, builder second. He and his college sweetheart, Shonda, have been building a life together since their days at UNC Chapel Hill — and together they are raising their two children, London and Kamden, right here in the Triangle. Born and raised in Tarboro, NC, Shaun is not just building homes in this region — he is invested in it, rooted in it, and deeply proud to call it home.
Faith and family are the cornerstones of everything Shaun does. His Christian faith shapes not only how he leads his company but how he shows up for every client, every team member, and every commitment he makes. When Shaun gives you his word, it means something — because integrity is not a business strategy for him. It is a way of life.
Ask Shaun what he loves most about this work, and he will not say the architecture or the square footage. He will tell you it is the relationships. Getting to know a family, understanding what home means to them, and walking alongside them through one of the biggest decisions of their lives — that is what drives him to keep raising the bar.
When he is not on a job site, you can probably find Shaun behind the grill working on his next signature steak, out on the golf course, or picking up his guitar. And yes — he bleeds red and gold. Once a 49ers , always a 49ers.
We hold ourselves to a standard that goes beyond code requirements and minimum expectations. Excellence is not an upgrade — it is our baseline on every project, for every client.
We tell the truth about timelines, budgets, and challenges. When problems arise — and in construction they do — we communicate proactively and find solutions. You will never be left guessing with us.
We own every outcome on the job site. Our name is on every home we build, and we build each one as if our reputation depends on it — because it does.
